Patriot Grave Re-Marking Ceremony
Sponsored by: The Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution on July 4st 2023.
In three years the United States of America will celebrate the 250th Anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. In preparation of this notable occasion the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution (CCSAR) will begin to honor 54 Patriots of the Revolutionary War who were buried in Hamilton County, very likely here in downtown Cincinnati where Washington Park is now located.
3CDC, who operates the Memorial Hall on Elm Street and helps to coordinate activities in the Park just across the street from the hall, is hosting a Ceremony where Cincinnati SAR will bring honor to the first five of the 54 Patriots whose names are listed on the 8 X 12 foot bronze plaque listing 200 names of Revolutionary War patriots buried in Hamilton County, OH. This ceremony will begin in the Hall and continue at the Grey Granite Marker placed by CCSAR in the Park at 2 PM on July 4th 2023.
There are 496 individuals that history tells us were buried in Hamilton County, OH after death here, all Served in the Revolutionary War and gave great sacrifice to establish the USA. 200 of those are named in Memorial Hall, 150 years ago the decision to close the cemeteries where we now have Washington Park left many Patriots abandoned there, some were reinterred in other cemeteries. We intend to for the first time to bring honor for those Patriots with a ceremony and then entering the location of their remains into the National Registry of the Sons of the American Revolution.
We hereby welcome interested people to attend and join us in this effort. We will perform five ceremonies at each event between now and the 250th Ceremony to be held in 2026. We will start with the following Patriots:
John Bartle (1743-1839) who served with NY as a Capt.
John Cavender (1760-1837) “ “ “ Maryland Militia.
Jesse Downs (1764-1826) “ “ “ Mass. Regiments
William Grant (1751-1827) “ “ “ Morgan’s VA Troops.
Joseph Halsey, Jr. (1751-1796) “ “ NJ as a Sergeant.
Access to the Memorial Hall ceremony limited to the first 60 guests.
