Chamber Music Cincinnati: Hagen Quartet

Please note:
This event is at Jarson-Kaplan Theater at the Aronoff Center for the Arts, not at Memorial Hall!

“It is hard to know what to admire most in the Quartet’s playing. It is almost impeccable, despite the many risks being taken… the focus and unanimity are astounding. The music seems to have an inner life…You get the impression that every note, every gesture, has been considered.” — New York Times

The astounding Hagen Quartet was founded in Salzburg during 1981 by four siblings, Lukas, Veronika, Clemens (and Angelika, who left in 1987). Its members are teachers and mentors at Salzburg’s Mozarteum and Basel’s Hochschule für Musik. In January 2018, they opened the Amsterdam Concertgebouw’s First Biennial String Quartet Festival and will travel to Berlin, London, Frankfurt, Florence, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Paris and three recitals in Tokyo. It has taken us nearly a decade to get the Hagen Quartet to Cincinnati.

The Hagen’s exclusive recording contract with Deutsche Grammophon produced forty-five CDs over 20 years. Between  December 2013 and August 2017, they performed on the four famous Stradivarius instruments played previously by the Paganini Quartet, the Cleveland String Quartet, and the Tokyo String Quartet. Their 2016 recording of Mozart’s string quartets K.387 and K.458 won both France’s Diapason d’Or and Germany’s Echo Klassik prize for Best Chamber Music Recording of the 17th and 18th Centuries.
